Surprising Thanks

ichs2A week ago today, my friend Linda invited me to join her in attending her grandaughter Emma’s chapel at lliana Christian High School. Emma joined several other students in leading the student singing. So what was the surprising thanks in this?

First surprise, the songs we sang. Blessed Assurance, Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, and When Peace Like a River were a few of them. These are not new songs, but rather songs with a rich history in church music. A student also shared the story behind the writing of each song which made the singing of them even more meaningful.

Second surprise, the reverence with which the whole group sang. Reverence means a feeling or attitude of deep respect tinged with awe, veneration. What a joy to experience that feeling of deep respect to God as they sang!

Finally, the thankfulness I felt after 20 minutes of standing up singing with this student body. I didn’t expect to walk away with a heart filled with gratitude to God for what He is doing in the lives of young people, but I did. Thanks be to God that His faithfulness continues from one generation to the next and it was evident in this place.  Well done, students, you are meeting “the challenge of His service!” Sing on!
