Sometimes changes in our lives are both sad and glad. During the night this past Monday, Henry’s 96-year-old mother passed away and is now at home with the Lord. She demonstrated amazing strength and quite good health through most of those 96 years, up until the last few months. But the suffering is over and now we think back on the memories. Throughout the last years’ visits we would engage her in conversation on topics such as: what life was like when she was a little girl, the homes she lived in, the work she did as a young girl and life during her teenage years. We also discussed the farm, the food, the fun. Remember. . .96 years ago transportation was by horse and buggy, roads were dirt, and most communication was face to face. She lived through a life of changes!
For the most part, food 96 years ago was grown and preserved right on one’s own farm. Gradually, companies like Campbell’s Soup, which started in Chicago in 1929, moved workers from the farm to the factory. Mother worked at Campbell’s Soup as a young woman. However, most of the food they ate was fresh and grown locally, such as spinach, beets, tomatoes, potatoes, corn, celery, and fresh chickens and turkeys. They were not at all concerned about preservatives and chemicals. Fertilizer was natural.
Most of what is in our grocery stores did not even exist when Mother was a child. And remember, food is what people ate for thousands of years. Today we process, preserve, color, emulsify, sweeten, chemically fertilize, thicken, wax, add growth hormones and antibiotics, besides adding pesticides, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides. And sometimes “food” manufacturers actually “create” food.
Would you agree that by doing all of this to our food, we end up with less than the food God has created? Would you agree that this new “food” is not feeding our cells like real food should? And could this be the reason our bodies struggle with so many health issues that are not infectious diseases, but rather they are falling apart from within? Diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and auto immune diseases?
As Mother told us recently, “I have had a good life.” We will all die some day and we hope the quality of our lives will be as healthy as possible. Does it make sense to give your body a little help with some real food supplements?
Henry and I just returned from the Shaklee 2013 Global Conference. This year was a busy time of listening to great speakers and reconnecting with our Shaklee family from all around the country. Here are some of thoughts on what we heard, new products, what is true for us, and what might be true for you:
Dean Smith set new US and World records at the World Indoor Rowing Championship, hosted by the CRASH-B Sprints that took place on February 17, 2013 at the Agganis Arena in Boston. Over 2,200 athletes raced from more than a dozen countries, with competitors ranging in age from 14 to 95. Dean’s world record time in the 2000 meter row was 8:10.5. Just Google Dean Smith Rowing to see how he has been keeping active.
Dean, a former world- class runner is used to being on the winner’s podium. Previously in Masters Track & Field he won World championship gold medals in Hanover, Germany and Gothenburg, Sweden for the 800 meter run, as well as several national championships. Bad knees brought an end to Dean’s running a few years ago, so he was delighted to find a new sport in which to compete. He joined the Rocky Mountain Rowing Club when he moved to Lone Tree, Colorado seven years ago. Since then he has won NINE World Championships in sculls on the water in Zagreb, Croatia, Vienna, Austria, Birmingham, England and Vilnius, Lithuania.
Dean is a young 86, and attributes his edge for success to using Shaklee Sports’ Products.
Keep up the great work, Dean! Thanks for being a great example of taking care of yourself and as a Shaklee leader for many many years! And thanks to Sarah Stauber for sharing this story of Dean’s success. What steps are you taking to stay young while getting older?
Last week it was announced that the Monopoly game piece, the iron, is being retired. So sad. That’s my piece. Ironing has always been a relaxing way for me to de-stress–get some of the wrinkles out of life and clothes. As a little girl I ironed all the “flat” pieces: hankies (anyone know what they are?), pillowcases, tablecloths, and as I grew older, sheets. And I still love to iron. Most people think that’s a little crazy, but when I share that I offer a prayer for whoever the item belongs to, they allow me the craziness. So I keep ironing and praying.
The lost iron is just another example of change. There is plenty of change, in our appliances, our technology, our ways of relating, our businesses. Sometimes it’s hard to keep up. My business, Shaklee, keeps changing with the times: new programs, new apps, new products. But I’m grateful the integrity of the company and the science behind the products never changes. When you use Shaklee, you know that you are putting the very best in your body, on your body, and around your home.
Shaklee is part-time work for me, so I’d be happy to do some ironing for you! And just wondering, how are you keeping up with the changes in life and business?
Last time we talked about starting the year by looking inside and finding out why we do what we do. So have you thought about why you do what you do? Seems simple. Perhaps you knew as a little girl or boy that you wanted to be a teacher, a doctor, a nurse or an insurance man. I wanted to be a teacher after being in Mrs. Voss’ Kindergarten class. Perhaps you observed others in the work you have chosen and couldn’t wait to do it yourself. Whatever occupation fills your days, the most important question may be not what you do but why.
Why do I have a Shaklee business? It has to do with respect–respect for the world, for work, and for others.
First, my work respects the way God created this world. In the last 75 years we have dramatically changed our food supply from the previous thousands of years. Many of the “foods” at the grocery store today did not even exist when I was a child. Dr. Shaklee predicted the health crisis and “falling apart from within” (heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, obesity) which many Americans experience. This is why he started Shaklee Corporation in 1956. His philosophy was to give others products made “in harmony with nature.” If you want a clear picture of the changes in wheat, read The Wheat Belly by William Davis.
Second, my Shaklee business respects work. This is not a punch the clock type of job. I once worked at a facility where my coworkers told me to slow down, take a break, don’t work so hard because you will make us look bad. Our pay would be the same if we worked hard or not. Not so with a Shaklee business–one is paid for the work accomplished, not for the time put in.
Third, this business respects others. After listening to individual health needs and concerns, then, without arm twisting, without pressure, without slick selling, I give a simple presentation of how and why Shaklee products might be of benefit to others, to you.
The following verse from the Bible tells me how to treat my body and my whole life. . . So, two questions: Why do you do the work you do? And how do you take care of the miraculous body that you have been given?
Master Coordinator Rick Seymour posted these top 11 predictions on Facebook recently. Sometimes it is difficult to open our minds to something new and different. So read all the way to the end and find out if your mind is open to investigating more about Shaklee.

Just in the past week, I heard about a 59-year-old dying of cancer, a man in his twenties on cholesterol medicine, someone with knee replacement who now has blood clots in her knee and lung, several other people on antibiotics, and many more with aches and pains which were hampering daily activity. Perhaps you have heard similar stories.
One of my purposes in this blog is to share a simple concept about how our bodies are created. When it made so much sense to me, I was willing to make a few simple changes–maybe you are doing the same or know of others who need to read this!
Our bodies are composed of trillions of cells which are constantly breaking down and being renewed. What do cells need to form properly? Vitamins, minerals, protein, phytonutrients, antioxidants, and pure water–this is why we need to eat. Our food has the nutrients that build health in our bodies; at least it should. Is our food the same today as it was 100 years ago? Not at all. Just think about all the changes in processing, farming, transporting, and preservatives.

After returning from Shaklee’s Global Conference and having an amazing time with friends, it got me thinking about all the families that I am a part of: my husband, kids and grandchildren, one parent, brothers and sisters, and nieces and nephews–each blessing my life in a unique way. And more blessings come from our family of friends, our Israel trip family, church family, former colleague family, and our Shaklee family.
At the conference, many of the speakers talked about how Shaklee products had greatly affected their families. Because of better health, especially with Healthy Weight Cinch success, they could now see an active, healthy, and thriving future with their families. One couple shared how even though they had already gone from “rags to riches” in life, their lives had no meaning and ended up in a wild, going down lifestyle. Their Shaklee business gave their family purpose and meaning with goals bigger than themselves. Another man shared how the Shaklee business had belonged to his parents and now his wife, children and grandchildren are blessed by both the products and the business.
One of the highlights of the conference each year is watching The Barnett Family. Each year Roger plays the piano and the children perform–this year with singing and guitars. So. . .precious. Roger also played the piano for Emmanuel Kelly who sang the song “Imagine.” When you watch this you tube link, imagine Roger at the piano. Emmanuel’s childhood story and rescue is so touching–be sure to have the tissues close by; he has no hands and no feet because of the Iraq war.
The most amazing story of family came from Sarah Hein. Take a moment to watch the story of their Shaklee life, but call me or email me if you want the back story. Their life looks like “Little House on the Prairie” now and there is a good reason for that. Sarah told us how her faith in God and the “Little House on the Prairie” book series took her through a devastating childhood and incredible hardship. I’d love to share more, just ask.
So this week I am thankful for my many families! We went fishing with grandson Henry John and to the beach with Megan and Henry; we have a new great-niece named Sophia Joy; we celebrated last night with part of our Israel-trip family; friends came to the cottage this summer; and I enjoyed the Shaklee family at conference. Blessings abound!
