Supplement Warnings for Target, Walgreens, GNC and WalMart

Did you catch the news yesterday about supplements? Four retailers have been issued cease and desist letters demanding they stop selling certain supplements.

This is from the Washington Post:

A warning to herbal supplement users: Those store-brand ginkgo biloba tablets you bought may contain mustard, wheat, radish and other substances decidedly non-herbal in nature, but they’re not likely to contain any actual ginkgo biloba.

That’s according to an investigation by the New York State attorney general’s office into store-brand supplements at four national retailers — GNC, Target, Walgreens and Wal-Mart.

This is from The New York Times:

The New York State attorney general’s office accused four major retailers on Monday of selling fraudulent and potentially dangerous herbal supplements and demanded that they remove the products from their shelves.

The authorities said they had conducted tests on top-selling store brands of herbal supplements at four national retailers — GNC, Target, Walgreens and Walmart — and found that four out of five of the products did not contain any of the herbs on their labels.

Shaklee is about health and safety:

Shaklee is the number one natural nutrition company in the U.S. Why?

The logical reasons are many:

  • Over $250 million invested in clinical testing, research, and development
  • Over 83,000 tests annually for product quality
  • Over 100 scientific papers, 90 of them published in peer-reviewed journals
  • Quality far beyond industry standards

We think health is the most important thing in the whole world. Without it, you have nothing else.

So everything that goes into every Shaklee bottle is designed to make you healthy. And since Shaklee does it so well, you tell your friends about it.

Dr. Shaklee’s vision was to give people the wealth of health. We still think that’s the best idea to build a company on.

Is Cleaning Killing You?

Is cleaning killing you by giving you cancer, reducing sperm counts, causing lung, liver, and kidney damage, causing asthma, or disrupting hormones? Find out from this blog post from Shaklee’s Healthwise Blog. Dr. Jamie tells why it is so important to be careful about  “clean!”

Your health and the environment

Your health and the environment

You are committed to good health and have daily activities and routines you follow in order to support your health. On most days, you start your morning with a workout or a power walk, then make your high-protein smoothee, and take your supplements, and brush your teeth. Then, throughout the day, you try to make the right decisions about eating healthy, drinking plenty of water, wearing your sunscreen, and putting activity into your day.

All these small steps taken day in and day out lead to a stronger and healthier YOU!

To round out your daily health routine, I want to be sure you aren’t missing an important part of the health puzzle by being exposed to chemicals in your environment.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tracks more than 84,000 chemicals used in commerce.  These chemicals, have worked their way into our everyday lives. Now, no matter how clean you try to live, it is impossible to escape exposure from these chemicals that may put an amazingly heavy burden on our liver and other detoxification pathways in our bodies. Chemicals are found in the food we eat, clothes we wear, personal care products we use, and even the very products that we use to keep our homes clean and safe.

Take a look at the chemicals found in common household cleaners:

Name Found in Potentially harmful effects
Phthalates Solvents used to make fragrances Endocrine disrupters: Men with high levels of phthalates in their blood have reduced sperm counts.
Perchloroethylene (PERC) Dry-cleaning solution, spot removers, carpet cleaners The EPA classifies PERC as a possible carcinogen and has ordered a phase-out of the chemical by 2020.
Triclosan An antibacterial found in dishwashing detergents and hand soaps Leads to drug-resistant bacteria and is a possible hormone disrupter.
2-Butoxyethanol Mostly found in window cleaners, is responsible for the sweet smell General irritant when inhaled, at high levels can damage lungs, liver, and kidneys
Ammonia Found in many cleaning products When inhaled, it can irritate the lungs and potentially worsen asthma.
Chlorine Another ubiquitous chemical, found in toilet bowl cleaner, mildew removers, laundry products, and even tap water Chlorine is very reactive and irritates skin and lungs. It may disrupt the thyroid.

While it can be daunting to think that we are surrounded by so many chemicals, the good news is that there are fantastic natural choices that will do the job these chemicals do just as well without exposing you and your family to potentially harmful fumes, solvents, and toxins.

Be sure you only have safe, green cleaners under your sink and in your laundry. Choosing green cleaners means that you are doing the best for your health, the environment, and your family’s well-being!

What is your favorite green cleaning tip?

Is Eating Right Enough?

Do you ever wonder if it is worth the money to take vitamin supplements? Just the other day I heard a doctor on TV say that it wasn’t necessary to take vitamins if you “eat right.” Is it possible to get all the nutrients we need for a healthy body with today’s American diet? Here are three things to consider.

food affects our bodies2First, it takes a lot of good eating every day to provide our bodies with enough nutrients to feed our trillions of cells properly. 98% of Americans do not eat the recommended seven to nine servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Therefore, we no longer die from infectious diseases like pneumonia and tuberculosis, but instead we are falling apart from within. Heart disease is the cause of 1 in every 4 deaths and did you realize that 80% of all heart disease in women is preventable?  America ranks 7th highest in the world for cancer occurrence. Diabetes plagues 25.8 million children and adults in America and did you know that 90% of all Type 2 diabetes is preventable? Does it look like we are doing a good job of “eating right?”

Second, besides trying to “eat right,” our food is not the same as it was 100 years ago. The Journal of American College of Nutrition stated that a study of 43 crops showed a decline in the nutrient content of up to 38% over the past 50 years. Because of the decline of nutrients in our foods, 90% of Americans fall short in getting essential nutrients in our diets. Just think for a moment. . .did the food you are putting in your grocery cart even exist 50 years ago? So would a supplement help or hurt your body?shakleecover photo2

Third, I don’t think you should take vitamins that are synthetic. Your body (liver) will just have to detoxify them. If you are going to get some extra help feeding your cells, be sure to check if the supplements you are taking meet the following requirements:

~ clinical studies on the ingredients or products

~ natural ingredients on the label–avoid artificial sweeteners, flavors, and preservatives

~  a company that focuses on safety and quality

~ provides an unconditional money-back guarantee

So, if you can “eat right,” knowing that the nutrient content is questionable, and that you are getting a guaranteed supply of essential nutrients every single day, go for it! But if you think your body (cells) need some help with supplements, take some good ones! Remember, each of your cells is made of vitamins, minerals, fats, and proteins, so feed them well.

The Iron Is Gone

ironLast week it was announced that the Monopoly game piece, the iron, is being retired. So sad. That’s my piece. Ironing has always been a relaxing way for me to de-stress–get some of the wrinkles out of life and clothes.  As a little girl I ironed all the “flat” pieces: hankies (anyone know what they are?), pillowcases, tablecloths, and as I grew older, sheets.  And I still love to iron.  Most people think that’s a little crazy, but when I share that I offer a prayer for whoever the item belongs to, they allow me the craziness. So I keep ironing and praying.

The lost iron is just another example of change. There is plenty of change, in our appliances, our technology, our ways of relating, our businesses. Sometimes it’s hard to keep up. My business, Shaklee, keeps changing with the times: new programs, new apps, new products. But I’m grateful the integrity of the company and the science behind the products never changes. When you use Shaklee, you know that you are putting the very best in your body, on your body, and around your home.

Shaklee is part-time work for me, so I’d be happy to do some ironing for you! And just wondering, how are you keeping up with the changes in life and business?

Questions About Supplements and More?

Most people wonder:  what supplements to take, if I need them at all, what are synthetic supplements doing to my body, how to keep my children healthier through the winter, can I build up my immune system, which sports drinks are safe, is there a way to lose and then keep the weight off, which green cleaners work and are really toxic free, and how will I ever find safe skin care products that make me look younger or heal my damaged skin.

Many people also wonder: how will I pay for private school tuition or college for my kids, will I be able to take a vacation with my family, will I ever get out of debt, or have I saved enough for retirement.

Do you know people with these concerns? Are you one of them? There is one place where you can find the answers. You may do this in the privacy of your own home. If you want to fill in a short questionnaire about what you learn, I would be happy to reward you (6/$25) for your education. Just check out this site for answers to your questions and concerns.

Have You Heard about Cancer, High Cholesterol, Arthritis This Week?

Just in the past week, I heard about a 59-year-old dying of cancer, a man in his twenties on cholesterol medicine, someone with knee replacement who now has blood clots in her knee and lung, several other people on antibiotics, and many more with aches and pains which were hampering daily activity. Perhaps you have heard similar stories.

One of my purposes in this blog is to share a simple concept about how our bodies are created. When it made so much sense to me, I was willing to make a few simple changes–maybe you are doing the same or know of others who need to read this!

Our bodies are composed of trillions of cells which are constantly breaking down and being renewed.  What do cells need to form properly? Vitamins, minerals, protein, phytonutrients, antioxidants, and pure water–this is why we need to eat. Our food has the nutrients that build health in our bodies; at least it should.  Is our food the same today as it was 100 years ago? Not at all. Just think about all the changes in processing, farming, transporting, and preservatives.

These changes require a change from us. A simple daily strip. A one month supply in a box. Vitalizer™.
