Is Cleaning Killing You?

Is cleaning killing you by giving you cancer, reducing sperm counts, causing lung, liver, and kidney damage, causing asthma, or disrupting hormones? Find out from this blog post from Shaklee’s Healthwise Blog. Dr. Jamie tells why it is so important to be careful about  “clean!”

Your health and the environment

Your health and the environment

You are committed to good health and have daily activities and routines you follow in order to support your health. On most days, you start your morning with a workout or a power walk, then make your high-protein smoothee, and take your supplements, and brush your teeth. Then, throughout the day, you try to make the right decisions about eating healthy, drinking plenty of water, wearing your sunscreen, and putting activity into your day.

All these small steps taken day in and day out lead to a stronger and healthier YOU!

To round out your daily health routine, I want to be sure you aren’t missing an important part of the health puzzle by being exposed to chemicals in your environment.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tracks more than 84,000 chemicals used in commerce.  These chemicals, have worked their way into our everyday lives. Now, no matter how clean you try to live, it is impossible to escape exposure from these chemicals that may put an amazingly heavy burden on our liver and other detoxification pathways in our bodies. Chemicals are found in the food we eat, clothes we wear, personal care products we use, and even the very products that we use to keep our homes clean and safe.

Take a look at the chemicals found in common household cleaners:

Name Found in Potentially harmful effects
Phthalates Solvents used to make fragrances Endocrine disrupters: Men with high levels of phthalates in their blood have reduced sperm counts.
Perchloroethylene (PERC) Dry-cleaning solution, spot removers, carpet cleaners The EPA classifies PERC as a possible carcinogen and has ordered a phase-out of the chemical by 2020.
Triclosan An antibacterial found in dishwashing detergents and hand soaps Leads to drug-resistant bacteria and is a possible hormone disrupter.
2-Butoxyethanol Mostly found in window cleaners, is responsible for the sweet smell General irritant when inhaled, at high levels can damage lungs, liver, and kidneys
Ammonia Found in many cleaning products When inhaled, it can irritate the lungs and potentially worsen asthma.
Chlorine Another ubiquitous chemical, found in toilet bowl cleaner, mildew removers, laundry products, and even tap water Chlorine is very reactive and irritates skin and lungs. It may disrupt the thyroid.

While it can be daunting to think that we are surrounded by so many chemicals, the good news is that there are fantastic natural choices that will do the job these chemicals do just as well without exposing you and your family to potentially harmful fumes, solvents, and toxins.

Be sure you only have safe, green cleaners under your sink and in your laundry. Choosing green cleaners means that you are doing the best for your health, the environment, and your family’s well-being!

Cancer Everywhere

Just yesterday a friend asked for some information about what has helped people going through cancer treatment. It is a timely request and it seems to be epidemic right now. Do you agree? Almost daily I hear of someone else who has been diagnosed with cancer. Just a couple of weeks ago, Henry and I attended a seminar by Martha Willmore, Wellness Coach, who has overcome lupus, luekemia, and most recently bites by a brown recluse spider. Before Shaklee she used other supplements with no results. What are some important things to do to prevent cancer and address it once we have it? She shared a lot of important health information with us and here is only a little:

What is Cancer?
Every minute 10 million cells in your body divide to create new cells. Usually this process occurs at the right time and in the right way. However, if the cell division process is defective, then cancer cells may be produced.
What causes defective cell division process?
~ Nutritional Deficiencies
~ Toxic Chemicals
~ Imbalanced Hormones
~ Stress
~ Radiation
~ Heavy Metals
IF the immune system is working as it should, these defective cells are identified and destroyed.
IF the immune system is not as healthy as it should be, the cancer cells will accumulate and form a tumor.
Optimal nutrition will give you the very best chance for an optimal immune response and maximum resistance to disease.
Good Cancer Strategy
~ Keep blood sugar low
~ Keep blood alkaline (lots of alfalfa & vegetables)
The only way to selectively starve cancer cells is to withhold glucose (carbs) and keep the body alkaline
~ Avoid sugar like the “plague.”  Why? Normal healthy cells use carbohydrates, protein and fat for their energy. Cancer cells use ONLY glucose (carbohydrates) and require acidic conditions to metabolize the glucose.
~ Reduce/eliminate:  Other foods that make the blood acidic, such as white flour, red meat, dairy
~ Supplement aggressively with Shaklee Whole Food Supplements
~ Detoxify

3 Best Earth Day Tips For You and the Earth

This post is a combination Earth Day and Pinterest creation. Earlier this year I went with our granddaughter Megan to an orchid show at Frederick Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, MI. I took many pictures of orchids with the hope of using them on my Pinterest boards. Please read tip #2 carefully: Eat food that is grown organically and food that will spoil. I think this is vital for your well-being and the well-being of this beautiful world God has given us for our earthly home. Man has created the thousands of toxic chemicals that are now in our world and causing us so much harm. It’s time to clean up and restore.

We heard Sandra Steingraber speak on the PBS Bill Moyer show recently. Her passion for cleaning up our world for the sake of our children made so much sense. As a biologist and cancer survivor, she spoke with knowledge and conviction about her book Raising Elijah. (This link is to her blog.) She used a phrase “toxic trespassing,” to describe the unwanted toxins we are all exposed to in the air we breathe and the food we consume. Very thought provoking.

What Happened to Ending Cancer?

Back in my 20’s, the “war on cancer” had just begun. Soon we would have a vaccine or something to prevent us from getting cancer just like we had for polio and smallpox. That was comforting since the “c” word was sooooo scary.

But what has happened? Since then the National Cancer Institute has spent $90 billion on research and treatment in the past 40 years, and 260 non-profit organizations have budgets of $2.2 billion, are we closer to winning the war? The statistics on incidences of cancer are not good with cancer playing a role in one out four deaths in our country.

According to Dr. Margaret I. Cuomo MD, in yesterday’s article in the Daily Beast (Newsweek online), “When it comes to treating cancer, we seem to be in a holding pattern. We are still relying on surgery, chemotherapy and other anticancer drugs, and radiation, just as we did 40 years ago.” She goes on, “What happened to ending cancer? Simply put, we have not adequately channeled our energy into a full exploration of the one path certain to save lives: prevention. (Italics mine) The failure to give prevention its due has been a longstanding complaint. Political tensions arose in the 1960s and 1970s between those who wanted more attention placed on preventing cancer by addressing occupational and environmental factors and those who wanted the locus of responsibility to fall more on individual behavior choices.”

Sometimes answers to prevention of cancer are right in front of our eyes and in our homes. Are there prevention answers in what goes in us, on us, and around us? What are you putting in you, on you, and around you?

Have You Heard about Cancer, High Cholesterol, Arthritis This Week?

Just in the past week, I heard about a 59-year-old dying of cancer, a man in his twenties on cholesterol medicine, someone with knee replacement who now has blood clots in her knee and lung, several other people on antibiotics, and many more with aches and pains which were hampering daily activity. Perhaps you have heard similar stories.

One of my purposes in this blog is to share a simple concept about how our bodies are created. When it made so much sense to me, I was willing to make a few simple changes–maybe you are doing the same or know of others who need to read this!

Our bodies are composed of trillions of cells which are constantly breaking down and being renewed.  What do cells need to form properly? Vitamins, minerals, protein, phytonutrients, antioxidants, and pure water–this is why we need to eat. Our food has the nutrients that build health in our bodies; at least it should.  Is our food the same today as it was 100 years ago? Not at all. Just think about all the changes in processing, farming, transporting, and preservatives.

These changes require a change from us. A simple daily strip. A one month supply in a box. Vitalizer™.
