Eczema and Children: from Scratchy to Clear

Moms or Grandmas, have you ever been with a little one who is suffering from eczema? The itching, scratching, and sometimes even bleeding on the skin is so very uncomfortable and painful. What is eczema? Eczema is a skin condition caused by inflammation of the skin. Typically, eczema causes skin to become itchy, red, and dry — even cracked and leathery. Eczema can appear on any part of the body.  According to webmd.com eczema is most common in children and infants and the good news is that many will outgrow it by the time they reach adulthood.

What causes eczema? “Doctors don’t know exactly what causes eczema. The most common type of eczema — atopic dermatitis — resembles an allergy. But the skin irritation, which is more often seen in children rather than adults, is not an allergic reaction.” (according to webmd)atopic dermatitus

The current thinking is that eczema is caused by a combination of factors that include:

  • genetics
  • abnormal function of the immune system
  • environment
  • activities that may cause skin to be more sensitive
  • defects in the skin barrier that allow moisture out and germs in

Your doctor will diagnose and then prescribe treatment which may include medications. However, many doctors do not know about natural treatments for eczema and yet, many moms are turning to more natural approaches.
