The Finish Line

Yesterday Henry and I walked the Chicago Half Marathon. We did this to raise funds for clean water for children through World Vision. As difficult as it was for us to train for the 13.1 mile walk, it doesn’t compare with the challenge of not having clean water to drink. It’s hard to imagine what that would be like when we are able to take a drink at almost any moment of the day.  Many thanks to all of you who supported us with both your financial help and your prayers.

We finished!  That was our goal! Will, Samuel, and Annetta were waiting for us at the finish line, which was a real treat and a surprise! They saw quite a few sights while waiting for us to come in. As Samuel told a friend of ours later in the day . . .”they finished and they didn’t pass out!”

We are so thankful for the health to be able to do this and for the love and prayers of supportive family and friends. Hurray! We don’t want to take any of this for granted!

Thankful for Busy Moms

Moms keep busy. . . taking children where they need to go, feeding kids what they need to eat, dressing children in clothes that fit for the changing seasons, and teaching them how to “get on” in this fast paced technical world. Sometimes that involves helping with homework. Our grandson was learning about community workers and showing these workers as turkeys to go along with the Thanksgiving season. His assignment was to make a turkey which highlighted community musicians. Don’t you love this very creative musician turkey? samuel's turkey

As grandparents we are so grateful that our children are taking their work seriously in feeding the grandchildren, getting them to bed on time, along with hundreds of other jobs, but most of all in teaching them to love the Lord!

One BIG task is feeding children. Moms all around the country are looking for ways to build healthier families by eating as close to nature as possible. Check out what these moms are doing: Jenni Oates and Brooke Thomas.

Here are a couple of healthy recipes that you,  your kids, and your grandkids will love. Best of all, you will have a great way to add some much needed protein to your diet!

Amazing Grace

Monday afternoon and we were having a fun time painting our granddaughter’s bedroom, which was a really cool graduation gift from her parents. . . and then. . . the call. “Ann? This is your neighbor, Sandy. A very large tree limb has fallen on your home and we just wanted to let you know. Many of the neighbors heard it and were gathered in your back yard.” I knew if Sandy were calling me it was most likely quite serious. “Thanks for calling, and we will get there as quickly as we can.” This is what we came home to:fallen limbfallen limb

This is the left side of the house with the sunroom just to the right in this picture. The following picture shows how the tree did not land on the sunroom which is surrounded with windows. Not a window is broken. Amazing. There is a hole in the ridge of the roof along with a few patches of roofing tiles which are awaiting repair.

Neighbor Rick called the tree man from his church who arrived within 20 minutes of our arrival. Our son came with his chain saw to help us. Neighbors Carla and Shawn arrived to haul branches and wood. Amazing. By dark a lot of cleanup was finished. limb from inside

This is the view from inside before it was removed from the roof. The tree man said 10-12 feet of that limb weighs about a ton. Amazing: no cracked walls, no broken windows, no fallen pictures or plates from the walls. After checking in the attic our son, Henry said the precise spot on the ridge where it landed was the strongest.

And you may be wondering. . .the weather? Sunny calm day.tree We don’t know why it fell, of course, but look at the dark spots in this one stack. Josh the tree man said that many years ago the tree had been struck by lightening and this left it damaged. All we know is that God’s amazing grace spared us from severe damage and we were not home to hear the awful sound! Amazing!

Sometimes we forget how very little is in our control. Although I have thought about limbs falling on our home, this event just reinforced how God is gracious in his protection. With the help of family, neighbors, Josh and his son Josh from Watkin Tree Pro, we were indeed blessed. Feel free to share your amazing story of God’s protection.

Henry’s Blood Pressure and No Wheat

We are so excited! For the last couple of years husband Henry’s blood pressure has been too high. He “tried to” watch his diet and took Shaklee supplements but it just wasn’t coming down fast enough. He wanted to avoid medication since that has its own side effects which lead to other problems.

51Z83dLKJPL._BO2,204,203,200_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-click,TopRight,35,-76_SX240_SY320_CR,0,0,240,320_SH20_OU01_In January of this year he read the book Wheat Belly by William Davis which talks about the changes in wheat production in the past 60 years. Interestingly enough, Dr. Shaklee started Shaklee Corporation because he knew 57 years ago that the health of Americans would suffer greatly because wheat production was changing. Davis is convinced that today’s nutritionally devoid grain “causes blood sugar to spike more rapidly than eating pure table sugar and has addictive properties that cause us to ride a roller coaster of hunger, overeating, and fatigue.”

The information was convincing enough that Henry started on no wheat, along with extra supplements. His meals did not include the gluten free products on the present market,Europe 2010 218 because gluten free is made with corn starch, rice starch, or potato starch. Davis states that these starches increase the glucose-insulin response even more than wheat and also cause weight gain. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner without wheat or sugar is not easy if you think about how much of our American food is based on wheat and sugar. But he did it with only a few “cheats.”  The first week of February his blood pressure was 157/97. But yesterday it was 120/93. Along with this good news, he feels better and has lost 20 pounds. Go Henry!

Are You Giving Your Kids Asthma? by Sloan Barnett

child-asthmaThis article by journalist Sloan Barnett appears in the Huffington Post Healthy Living section. When her experience with son Spencer terrified their family, Sloan became passionate about eliminating the strongest asthma inducing chemicals from their home. She studied intently to find the reason for his attack. Do you know a child with asthma?

My son Spencer had just turned three when, one day, I noticed he was coughing a lot. At first, I didn’t think anything of it. Kids get sick. I told him to lie down, thinking he’d be fine — it was just a cough. A short time later, I realized that his heart was pounding, as if it were trying to beat right out of his chest.

Terrified, my husband, Roger, and I rushed him to the hospital. We spent the next two nights in the ICU. The doctors told us he had something called reactive airways dysfunction syndrome — a form of asthma. Neither my husband nor I had any family history of asthma, going back four generations. So we concluded that the cause was environmental.

It didn’t take long to discover that the U.S. is in the midst of an asthma epidemic. The number of people diagnosed with asthma grew by 4.3 million in the last decade. About one in 10 American children currently suffer from asthma — a nearly threefold increase from 3.6 percent in 1980. A suspected cause of these stunning changes?

At least six well-designed epidemiological studies have pointed to one answer: A strong link between the use of certain cleaning products and asthma. That stopped me cold. The cause of my son’s asthma may have been me. I may have been poisoning my own son.

The good news is that this is one area where easy, affordable solutions are available. First and foremost, you should avoid what can be the strongest asthma triggering chemicals present in conventional cleaners such as bleach, hydrochloric acid and ammonia. And as we discussed last week, these chemicals are often mixed together to create an even more dangerous combination. Next go out and buy yourself non-toxic, biodegradable, green cleaning products.

1. Gather all your cleaning products and read the labels.

2. Notice how dangerous and toxic they are. Then, take a deep breath (but not near the cleaning products).

3. Take all the ones that say “danger,” “poison” or contain chlorine bleach and ammonia and put them in a garbage bag.

4. Call your local sanitation department and ask them how to dispose of them safely.

5. Buy green cleaning products, and breathe deeply and safely.

By the way, my son is 11 and hasn’t been to the emergency room in 1,825 days. But who’s counting?

Thanks for sharing your experience and for all the research you have done, Sloan. So glad you found safe products for Spencer and your entire family.
